Michigan House Bill 5897 Would Increase Fees for Historic Vehicles
We gotta pay attention folks!
It looks like the State Of Michigan is trying to pay for its’ debts any way it can. Now we are being used to enhance their revenue. We need to tell them “NO!”
Legislation (H.B. 5897) introduced in the Michigan legislature threatens to change the $30 registration fee for historic motor vehicles (renewable every ten years) to an annual fee. Under current Michigan law, the owner of an historic vehicle may also choose to use restored authentic Michigan plates from the same year as the vehicle’s model year for a one-time fee of $35. H.B. 5897 would increase that one-time fee as well, to an annual registration fee of $30. Under the bill, each of the registrations would come up for renewal every year on the vehicle owner’s birthday. We Urge You to Contact Members of the Michigan House Transportation Committee Immediately to Request Their Opposition to H.B. 5897
Currently, the owner of an historic vehicle applying for an historic registration pays a $30 fee which is valid for ten (10) years.
Currently, the owner of an historic vehicle applying to use an authentic restored Michigan registration plate pays a “one-time” $35 fee which is valid until the owner sells, transfers, or scraps the vehicle or modifies the vehicle in a manner that requires the issuance of a new title.
H.B. 5897 ignores the fact that these older cars are infrequently driven (about one-third the miles each year as a new vehicle) second or third vehicles and deserving of reduced registration fees.
H.B. 5897 ignores the fact that many historic vehicles are owned and maintained by low and fixed income Americans who are less able to afford a higher, annual fee.

For my Non-Secular Friends:
Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2010, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wish.
To My Religious Friends:
Happy New Year in the year of our Lord Jesus Christ 2010.
The main point of this note is to NOT turn on A/C as soon as you enter the car. Instead open the windows after you enter your car and turn ON the AC only after a couple of minutes of airing it out.
According to a research, the car dashboard, sofa, air freshener emit Benzene, a cancer causing toxin (carcinogen – take time to observe the smell of heated plastic in your car. Also known as the “new car smell”). In addition to causing cancer, Benzene poisons your bones, causes anemia and reduces white blood cells. Prolonged exposure will cause Leukemia, increasing the risk of cancer. It can also cause miscarriage. It also affects your kidney and liver… What’s worse, it is extremely difficult for your body to expel this toxic stuff.
Acceptable Benzene level indoors is 50mg per sq.ft. A car parked indoors with windows closed will contain 400-800 mg of Benzene. If parked outdoors under the sun at a temperature above 60 degrees F, the Benzene level goes up to 2000-4000 mg, 40 times the acceptable level.
People who get into the car, keeping windows closed will inevitably inhale, in quick succession, excessive amounts of the toxin. So friends what you need to do is open the windows and door of your car – give time for interior to air out – dispel the deadly stuff – before you enter.
Holiday…Yes… But not Christmas!
Once again it is that time of the year! The end of the old and the start of the new! I will now rant about what I find to be annoying about this time of year. Again. The one thing that triggers me off is the signs and posters that harrange about “Remember What This Season Is About” and “Jesus Is The Reason For The Season”. Politely put … BULL SHIRT!
Christians simply pirated an existing party for their own needs!
The seasons key elements, the evergreens, wreaths, holly and the gift giving have nothing to do with Jesus or the Christian faith as they are continually telling you! These icons and the celebration of this time of the year go way before that. Centuries actually and are pagan in base. New Grange is circa 3200 BC! The celebration is actually for the Winter Solstice! The shortest day of the year and the marking of a new year / cycle of life. The celebration was for the Wheel of Life! Death of the old “year” ( the old man) and the birth of a new “year” (baby New Year). The celebration was for the sharing of the growing seasons reaping with those in need through the hard winters in those days and times. A simple act of kindness within the community. And a reason for a cheery get together in the dead of winter. The decorations were of things that stayed green a year-long. Just that simple!
It is also becoming very well documented in the scientific communities that all of the signs that are proclaimed by the Christians, such as the star, did indeed happen. But apparently not until a few months later, Februaryish. But since they had a need for a landmark celebration they jumped on the Winter Solstice celebration. Which, by the way, they were already participating in this festival, before they were so-called Christians, this time very year anyway so…… with a bit of time shifting and a tweak of the old theme….. instant Christmas! Look! We are not pagans!
So when these holiday charlatans start in with their secular Christmas chant I have to get annoyed and politely tell them to bugger off and simply enjoy the seasonal holiday without their Jesus thing applied to it. It is NOT Christian but an ages old celebration of community good will and good cheer! A pretty noble and worthy celebration to continue on with. Like I said in the beginning … a holiday just not Christmas!!
At the time Sanford and Son was a funny series. They were classic junk men. Collecting what they could and gleaning through what they collected for the good items that could be resold for a profit. This new genre of scrappers is a whole different story. I have to make a comment here because these guys have become a pain in the butt.
Why you ask? Because these roving metal collectors are scooping up all of the raw free resources for those of us that fabricate. Metal bed frames, work out benches and aluminum folding chairs have been a long time source of angle and round material. Now with these scrappers they scoop up anything with metal content to sell for a buck. While I don’t really have a problem with the entrepreneurship, I am seeing a lot of good materials disappear into the back of some raggedy pickup.
Some of these scrappers are so bold as to victimize unattended homes and businesses for the copper plumbing, air conditioners, heating systems and aluminum siding. And anything else of value for that matter. And I must amend that statement of unattended, my business was attacked while we were in the building! They were actually after our city power cables!
Unfortunately these scrappers, who are looking for simple poundage, are also collecting bed frames, bicycles, metal patio tables, even fencing indiscriminately in their quest for a buck. These could actually be used again along with other similar parts but that escapes their logic. I have actually stopped a couple of them and asked to buy off an item and they pretty much told me to bugger off. All in all I must say that while on one hand I praise the effort to make a buck and clean up our cities at the same time, on the other hand I am aggravated by these same people because of the loss of some raw materials and for the loss of historical nostalgia pieces along the way.
Hopefully I am not the only guy who sees these scrappers as a pain in the butt. Just one mans’ opinion!
This is the kind of stuff that really needs mandatory jail time! It is illegal in some states but most don’t care enough to deal with it. And not a whole lot of enforcement unless it goes sideways like this one. This guy almost killed an elderly woman, while he had his daughter in the truck and the towed vehicle got loose and hit a house!
